Barrett’s oesophagus is a condition where the normal cells lining the oesophagus are replaced in response to excessive exposure to acid. The normal squamous epithelium is replaced by specialised columnar epithelium with goblet cells (intestinal metaplasia).

The risk factors for developing Barrett’s oesophagus including severe and long standing GORD, abnormal oesophageal motility and large hiatus hernia.
